The Airedale Terrier is the breed tagged as the King of Terriers. It is indeed worthy of such a nickname, especially when it comes to size, usefulness, intelligence, and devotion. Originally, this breed was developed as working dogs. As time went on, new skills have been discovered in this dog, and these have earned him another accolade as one of the most versatile breed of dogs.
The Airedale originated in England, in the region called valley of Aire during the 19th century. Originally a cross between small terriers and large Otterhounds, the Airedale came out possessing great hunting instincts, a superb sense of smell, and a natural affinity to water.
During the first years of its existence, the Airedale Terrier worked as rodent and bird hunter, otter catcher, and game retriever. In World War I, Great Britain and Germany used the Airedale as police dogs and as aids in the battle field. The breed became guards, messengers, and medics… and performed exceptionally well.
The Airedale Terrier is a medium-sized dog that possesses a double coat of wiry, coarse and dense undercoat and a softer and smoother undercoat. It has a distinct bearded muzzle and densely long-haired legs. When this creature stands, it stands majestically and emits a recognizable pride that no wonder the title "king" suits it perfectly.
